It can be very difficult to quit smoking cold turkey, but it doesn't cost a thing and you can start today!

As many ex-smokers can attest, it can be very difficult trying to figure out how to quit smoking cigarettes. According to an article in the New York Times (Blakeslee, March 29, 1987), cigarette smoking is harder to quit than heroin. One of the hardest ways to quit smoking is "cold turkey."

Quit Smoking Cold Turkey

Some smokers are able to quit "cold turkey," picking a day to smoke their last cigarette and vowing never to smoke again. While some smokers choose a day in advance and mark it on the calendar, many smokers decide to quit on the spur of the moment. When the decision to quit smoking comes suddenly, an important mental hurdle is throwing out that last pack of cigarettes. It's more helpful to some people to be able to remind themselves that they chose to throw the cigarettes away and never look back; this mental advantage isn't present for smokers who decide to quit smoking when the last pack is gone.

Nicotine Withdrawal

Quitting cold turkey can be very difficult, especially for people who have been smoking more cigarettes for a long period of time, because nicotine withdrawal can be a very unpleasant thing. What are some of the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal?

  • Irritability
  • Intense craving for cigarettes
  • Insomnia
  • Tiredness
  • Headaches
  • Tension
  • Problems concentrating
  • Increased appetite
  • Weight gain

Increased appetite and weight gain are important to note, because they are especially troubling to many people who are trying to quit smoking. Nicotine is an appetite suppressant, so it is hard for the body to adjust to a normal level of appetite. In general, though, the positive health effects of quitting smoking far outweigh the negative health effects of gaining a few extra pounds.

The important thing to remember is that the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal decrease over time. If you can make it through the early days of quitting cold turkey, it will get easier to avoid picking up cigarette smoking again as time goes by.

Tips for Cold Turkey Success

Keeping all of this in mind, there are some things you can do to make the cold turkey method easier on yourself, and make it less likely to start smoking again.

One thing you need to do is to drink plenty of water. Not only will drinking water keep you hydrated and give you something to do with your mouth instead of puffing on a cigarette, but it will help your body flush the impurities out of your system faster.

Keep your mouth busy. Chewing sugarless gum or sucking on hard candy will keep your mouth busy when you start feeling the need to smoke. Sucking on a lollipop or chewing on a straw or a pen will also give you something to hold onto if you need to keep your hands busy as well as your mouth.

When a craving hits, try closing your eyes and counting to ten while taking some deep breaths. If that doesn't work, take a walk to get yourself away from temptation.

If all else fails, call a friend, relative, co-worker, or a smoker's help line. Get some outside support to remind you of all the reasons why you decided to quit in the first place: your health, your family, your finances, your appearance, etc. Or talk about anything but smoking to divert your attention until the urge to smoke passes.

i'm finding it a little hard cause today will be my last one that i ever have even though i have only been smoking for one year but in that one year i have smoked two packs a day switching between newport© and mavrick© along with many other brands i calcultated the cost of my habbit to be more the eight hundred dollars and my health has decreased horibly and to be honest i got tired of having to run my life around them at first i started just to relieve some of the stress however after a few days i was hooked and i thought that after the stress had stoped i could stop to however that was not the case at all it was drug and i was it's addict and now that I want to clean up so to speak i'm ready to take that first big step. yes it will be hard and overwhelming but i truely am ready to do this not only will my mouth not tast like the end of a car tail pipe i wont be finding ways to cover up the smell of it eather.

I was a smoker for 22 years and quit cold turkey on September 21, 1999. The hardest part was the first few days, but keep your will strong and anyone that truly wants to quit can succeed. A motivating factor for me was the realization that an inanimate object (a pack of cigarettes) had such control and influence in my life. That thought was upsetting to me and I decided that a change was in order. Good luck to anyone that is quitting, don't give in to temptation, you'll have some cravings, but they really are just fleeting moments and please don't give in and let them win. You can do it!

the tips here are very nice. i have myself quit smoking and it has nothing to do with will power. i dont have to use my will power for not taking cocaine or heroin. nicotine is a type of drug and so why should i need will power? if you think on these lines, it would be easier. and also there is no such thing as one cigarette. it will always lead to some more. and if i can quit cigarette, then i am very sure that the other guys can as well.. all the best..............

It's been about 3 weeks since I quit this time, for about the 4-5th time. I smoked for about 40 years! My, time does fly when you're having that much fun hacking and coughing. Now, despite my husband's inability to quit, I decided it was MY time, and am doing it with or without him. I will say, he's been considerate and not smoked around me, so that helps, but the ashtrays and stray cigarette packs left around the house do not.
Thanks for the encouragement here ... we need all the help we can get, and help each other hang tough!

I have been smoking for 26 years! I have never smoked in our home or around our children, but I have had three children and smoked while pregnant with all three! I hate myself for that, but here I am pregnant again and I really thought I could quit this time (being older and more mature...ha!), but so far I have not (I'm 32 weeks). This has got to be my last day...I hate everything about smoking! Thankfully, after many sonograms, my baby is measuring ahead, but there could be potential complications later...I am so ashamed of myself!

This article isn't telling me anything I haven't already told myself or tried, but I have been "trying" to quit for 7 months now! I was also one of those "I'll quit when this pack is gone...," but I never do! I just threw my last few cigs and lighter in the trash! I am hoping that does something...

I wish you all the best of luck!!!!!!

I am only 17, almost 18 and i've been smoking for 5 sum years...it's getting harder each time i buy a new pack, i don't know how many times i've tried to quit cold turkey and i always seem to sway back to my normal routine of cigarettes when i wake up, at lunch, and a few when i get home, it's escalated to the point where my girlfriend is affected by it, we've been going out for 2 years, and i don't want my addiction to be the end of it, if i don't quit now...when will it end? i need to just smoke my last 2 packs, and make myself a promise that if i don't, it could be my relationships, and frankly i prefer sex over a cigarette haha

So here I am quitting yet again. I am chewing gum and looking for some support. I found this website and find it to be very helpful. Another piece of advice is try working out. Walk lift weight watever it takes. every time I crave a smoke I go work out for 20 min. So not only am I quitting but I am also getting back in shape at the same time. Kill two birds with one stone. lol. good luck to all.

Good article, amusing how people just quitting are finding their way here. I have smoked for 14 years, 9 of those heavily 15+ a day, but up to 60. i had a chest x ray 3 days ago, i was having chest pain, turns out it was stress related and i was ok in the lungs and heart (i am 27 yrs old) but the thought of it not being ok was scary. i have not smoked since, and i am going cold turkey, its bloody hard but very rewarding and i feel better already after only 3 days! i have so much energy i am going to start running again. i never thought i wanted to quit until then, but now i believe i do. fingers crossed! i am keeping motivated because if i cant do it i will feel like i am weak and i reckon i will feel like i let myself down. Motivation enough? we will see...

I think this article is very informative, but also very hard to quit smoking. There is this guy who we get along very well, and he wants me to quit smoking. I decided to at least try. I am not trying to change "for him," but I do believe that changing in this way will be positive and also help me later in life as well as now. I am starting to quit today, and I am going to try to do it cold turkey. My best friend smokes, but I will have to bear it because she will not stop anytime soon. I am just 18 years old, and smoke at least a pack a day. Thank you for the article, it made me feel like I can do it!

I am going to go to bed Saturday night, and when I wake up on Sunday I am going to be an ex-smoker. I was doing very well with not smoking at the end of last year, but after being robbed at gunpoint at my job I immediately picked up a cigarette and just haven't had the motivation since to stop. I went to my dentist and he told me that my teeth are so bad and if I don't quit smoking i am going to lose all of my teeth within the next 5 years. He told me that if I quit smoking and agree to never smoke again he will take me under his wing and do all of the work for me free of charge...needless to say I am saying goodbye to my habit in 20 hours! Good Luck to everyone else who is going through this as well!

This is article is pretty good. But like someone stated before, there's nothing in this article i haven't heard before. I started smoking 3 years ago when I was kicked out of college. I had "socially" smoke black n milds but switched to cigarettes once in college. I think I'm going to try stopping once I finish my present pack. I tried throwing half a pack away one day, but i pissed myself off thinking about the wasted money and dug through the trash can (in public) and got em back out and fired one off right then! Hopefully after this pack, I can have the strength to chew gum, eat candy, and drink water to overcome cigarettes. I really wanna stop cause I'm a traveling musician/singer. For the last three years, smoking has severily damaged my throat to where my voice is WAAAYY deeper and raspy limiting my vocal range, which in the future could cause me to loose out on a lot of money. Wish me luck...better yet...pray for me!

7 days, first 3 with the patch, it didn't really help so I said screw it and have went cold turkey since. All I want to do is sleep, at least when you sleep you don't crave!! One thing is for certain, I don't want to smoke again, I don't want to go through this ever again!!

Hi

I went cold turkey on the 9/02/2010. My Gynecologist told me after having 3 miscarriages that if I don’t quite right away my chances of losing this baby is 60% it made me think of this is not just my life but the life of my unborn baby that was it I quite. I just came back from the Gynecologist today and for the fist time I saw my baby’s heartbeat. No graving in this world is too hard or unbearable. You’re stronger than that. If I could do it so can anyone. It's only bad for the first three days after that. It just gets easier.

I went cold turkey 5 days ago. I smoked for 20 years and about 10 cigs a day. I'm 38 and felt like a slave to the nicotine. I would hide my smoking, so I would run errands, and then come home and smoke, then back out again.
On Monday (2/15) - I finally realized that I had enough of this slavery to the cigerette. I want freedom from and hate being a slave. I researched Chantix and Zyban and then the light just clicked in my head...why do I want to take all these pills with major sideeffects. It's not worth it. So I just quit right then and there. And let me tell you....IT"S BEEN EASY!!!!!! Once you get your mind set, you really can do it. I thought more about cigerettes when I was smoking, than I do know. Crazy but true. Just get the nicotine out of your system (usually 2-3 days). YOU CAN DO IT.
Remember, don't be a slave to the nicotine. It's a drug and the monster just wants you to 'feed' it. don't give in. And good luck to everyone (including myself!).

I still dont understand what is Cold Turkey. I was smoking for 15 years , a pack or two on average. I tried to give up for couple of times, but I couldnt. Both the times that I ran into some trouble and had smoke again. This time I thought even If I get any trouble I will not go back to smoke. Whenever I feel to have a smoke I am reading these kind of articles, or am just going to my regular smoking area and walk there for 5 to 10 mins and come back. I believe when you feel like smoking go to the place where you used to smoke regularlty and spend your time there. Dont run away from the problem. I am feeling more sleepy now a days.

I thought this article was succinct and helpful. I do want to comment about the lady whose husband is still smoking. You have to worry about YOU. Hopefully, he will eventually quit. You can't make him. I have been without a cig for 38 hours and this is my 4th attempt. I can do it this time because I am more educated and I hate to see what my insides look like. That was key. Been smoking for 30 plus years a pack a day. Enough is enough is enough. Good luck to all of you. A great site is WhyQuit.Com. It's an advocate of Cold Turkey.....lots of great things to read because as we all know, that's all that's on our mind when we first quit.....we need SUPPORT. You can do it!

smoker for 17 years. Initially one cigarette occasionally b ut since 2000 it had gone up to 3 cigs a day. I quit 11 days ago cold turkey when I noticed that I was smoking 5-6 cigs a day. For last several months I had been thinking about quitting but two weeks ago during my son's basketball game, I hated myself when I stepped out of the gym and light up. I felt disgusted and threw the rest of the pack away in garbage. No cig since then. It has been 11 days and cravings are gone.
I do oocasionally want to smoke after meals but I suppress that craving by eating something sweet.
I am hoping to quit forever.

I mentally quit at the start of the Olympics and swore that February 28 would be my last day of smoking. I have smoked for 34 years and 1-2 packs a day if not more, does have its effect on your body. I was watching the closing ceremonies and I was smoking still, when they extinguished the olympic flame, thats when I put out my last cigarette. I know its only been 3 days but I found it rather easy to stay away from the "stick" because I had set a quitting date and allowed myself a chance to smoke some more as I worked up to my set date. I even threw away about 4 packs to convince myself I had the power to do so. I have had some sweating episodes and other body episodes since, but I truly think I am going to stay away this time. Good luck to everyone who is trying to quit, remember, its never easy, but it is possible, the difference is you...

i've smoked roughly 1 pack a day from 13 years old to almost 21 years old; cigarettes quickly gained a place in my daily routines. everything i did included a cigarette, or had the thought of a cigarette break present. tobacco seems to integrate itself easily into life, routine, and ultimately into controlling your behaviors to certain extent. a similar effect can be said of heroin, and accept or dispute, nicotine has been referenced as more addictive than heroin. as a former addict of both cigarettes, i.v. heroin, and other chemicals/behaviors, my personal experiences give me statute to understand a hard lifestyle change as quitting cigarette smoking. to anyone who may read this article, let its words ring through your head, and remember although you may quit for life, it is much easier to not use/quit for the day first. good luck!

I quit around noon yesterday. Spur of the moment cold turkey. It has not been easy. I am irritable, tired, and the cravings are intense! Yes, they are only brief flashes of cravings, but I am getting them quite often. I am already starting to feel like I need to substitute cigarettes with food. That is the last thing I want to do. I have quit cold turkey before and honestly, I don't remember it being this hard. I went 2 1/2 years without smoking. The day I decided to quit the first time, I never even looked back. Why does it have such a grasp on me this time!? Before I quit the first time, I had been smoking for 9 years. This time I have only been smoking for a little over a year.

This may sound weird (I'm on my xth time attempt to stop smoking!!) but I'm changing the way I think about 'quitting'. Instead of saying I'm 'quitting smoking', I'm saying I'm 'choosing not to smoke', I'm not an ex smoker, I'm a non smoker! Because the minute you tell yourself your quitting, you feel like you are deprived of something.

I'm 29, have stopped smoking for 18 months before and 5 months until recently. This time I swear I won't touch another cigarette, it's soo easy to get back into smoking.

I have used NRT in past, this time I'm going 'cold turkey'. I feel like crap today but once I've got through tomorrow, the 3 day hurdle I'll be fine! After the 3rd day it's easy.

This article is really good, I'm downing litres of water at the moment & on the chewing gum, they make a difference & water fills you up so you don't snack as much!

Good luck to you all!!!

I've quit smoking for 7 months. I really understand the meaning of "one day at a time". I would tell myself that if I still want to smoke I'll buy some tomorrow but for the rest of today I'll remain smoke-free. I still haven't bought the cigs and it gets easier every day. Stick with it and you'll be free.

I'm 22 yrs old and have smoked about a pack a day since i was in sixth grade. Yeah ten years total. I'm incredibly stil in good health i can run, swim, walk for long distances without being winded. I am having a child and do not wish to countinue smoking and have decided cold turkey is the best and most direct approach there is. I have three smokes left and i'm done. I have a strong will power and am looking at it very positively. Wish me the best. And for anyone that says I can't i'm looking forward to proving them wrong -Red Privates

Good luck everyone - I'm 85 hours in quitting from just 5 a day, and pretty sleepy and feverish, cold sweats, but it is easing off and it does get better. What did it for me was last week I was at a tube station in London where there was no escalator, huge queue for the lift, and I realised I was already out of breath and wouldn't get up the stairs. Not overweight, athletic, and trapped underground! So I stopped on the spur of the moment. Giving up has got to be worth it. But don't listen to those smug non-smokers!

I think you have some valid points but as far as smoking being harder to quit then heroin that seems a little far fetched. On the other hand it is very hard to quit smoking when many people you know smoke and your around them a lot. I'm 22 years old and I've been smoking off and on since 12 years old. I've try to quit many times but each time I quit it only lasted 7 months until a few years ago I quit for a whole year and stated to drink and eat healthier to and lost almost 30 lbs ..but I ended up getting stress out a lot and i went back to it like it was my normal routine everyday.I hope to quit as soon as possible.

This article is straight to the point and its all right in your face.. You don't have to search the whole site to find an answer. I liked that. I am 22 years old. I have smoked every since I can remember.. Sneaking from my parents..getting caught.. Ha ha. I have two children and I weigh only 88 lbs. I'm 4'11". This is my only choice. I try so hard to quit.. But its just too hard I guess. That's what I always say. But this time.. I'm serious. I'm too skinny and I feel so unattractive and I just feel disgusted with myself. Its time.... Time for this to become reality.. I have to do this not only for me.. But for my children. To see my child walk up to me with my lighter and tell me "moke mama"... That hurts me. So.. Wish me luck everyone. Its time. Got a whole carton that will be burnt in the morning. Gonna set them on fire in my burn pile. Goodbye Marlboro Lights. April 7, 2010.

Well, i'm 53 years old and smoked since i was about 14. Time to give it away and with the help of the Australian government who put on a 25% increase on tobacco prices. The cost of a packet of 40 smokes is nearly $20 au, and i just can't afford to smoke and my health is on a downward spiral so it's time to give up permanantly..

I am smoke free since Sunday May 16,2010 7pm! That make me as of this writing smoke free for 56.5 hours. I figured I would cover some details on how I over came my first 2.5 days.
7pm sunday. I finished my last cigarette. My mouth feels so crappy, i hate the idea of spending the money.
BAM- Cold turkey.
I did not quit mind you! I just decided to stop for the rest of the day and see what happens on Mon.
Mon am- i wake and sit for about two hours just thinking about smoking or not smoking! I make my morning coffee and just sit there. My head is in a haze. I feel almost light headed, but not really. I am just kinda spacey. Wow! I am hungry!! I never eat in the morning. I eat and eat and eat! Wow! I go take a shower. My first real positive thing, is that my mouth feels so good. I brush my teeth about three time cause I am just enjoying the fresh mouth feeling. I have just a little coffee. Don't taste as good without its buddy! That's okay, i wasted my morning. I have things to do so I go. I am positive about my decision. I stop at the supermaket and get 2 64 liters of ocean spray cranergy. Cranberry is suppose to help get rid of the toxins a little quicker. I also bought. Bluberry post cereal box with granola chunks to snack on. I did this cause i cant believe how hungry i am. The cereal and the juice was a great choice for me. Its monday 4pm. I did not get much accomplished today, except the mere fact that I AM SMOKEFREE for almost 24 hours!! I went to the ymca and joined. I walked a mile, and worked out a little. It did wonders for the head in the clouds! Lots of water, then went home could not sleep. Eat more of my cereal, drank my juice and these cravings that come on you are I guess like a hot flash for a women, they seem to come out of nowhere and almost take over your body and thoughts for a couple of minutes. Make sure you dont have access to cigarettes during this moment. Heavy, deep breathing helps a bunch. Then its gone. I spent my night Enjoying my heal. I feel little changes like, better circulation, my mouth just feels Sooo good! My hands smell so good. My bones already stopped hurting, my joints, knees, hip, neck!! i am only 41 and thats all my daily hurt areas. I am sore from working out but that is not it. I am HEALING.
Water, juice, food food and more food!
Wed am- wow its 3am i am still up and that last craving was a rough one. But thats okay because at 7pm we will be nicotine free in my system!!!

I quit smoking 1 week ago. I smoked for 15 years. My body is sore. I am going through so many mental and physical changes. My chest feels tight all the time and it's hard for me to breath at times. However, I refuse to smoke again. I have no desire to smoke again. The first 48 hrs were the worst. Good Luck to everyone who has quit and keep the good work up.

Hello all, I quit Saturday night May 22 2010 cold turkey. It is day five and i am having a hard time, don't know why it seemed the first 3 days were better. However i have quit at least 10 times but never cold turkey, I found that it was just as easy as if I were on champex or zyban, or the patch, that must mean most of it is mental. I will continue this fight, I Want to be a non smoker.

I haven't had a cigarette since I went to bed on May 31, 2010. Ok, it's only been 2 days but I have to say it hasn't been too bad. I have what feels like 100 short cravings a day but I haven't given in. I'm keeping an unopened pack in my refrigerator just in case but I'm also telling myself if I smoke just one I'll smoke 35 or more a day again. I also keep reminding myself that the urge for a cigarette will go away whether you have one or not so I'm choosing NOT to. I don't know if I can keep this up forever but it's working for me right now. Just ride that stupid craving and don't give in. IT WILL PASS.

i like many others have tried to quit cold turkey many times before but still havnt managed to quit yet. i've been smoking for 5 years now up to 1+pack a day if i could afford it but have recently slowed down since i can hardley breath when i wake up in the morning and you can almost always here a wease in my breath so today im deciding to quit i have one cigaret left but instead of throwing it out i think a great way to stop smoking is just hold it in your mouth whenever you have a craving(try to make sure theres no lighters/matches around) and think of all the reasons health and personal that you dont want that cigaret anymore also i like the excersise idea! if you have a dog take it for a 20 min walk everytime you want a smoke i know i hate smoking while im walking and it will be good for you and your dog

i quit cold turkey last month. the biggest motivating factor i included for me to quit was taking a run everyday. those first few days i could barely do a quarter mile without hacking up a lung. as time went on i no longer needed a ciggarette but needed to be able to run a mile without dying. the running took over the nicotine. now im at 2 miles and no hacking. everyone needs to find their own way.

Day 9 of quiting and after 9 days of torment, being zoned out and of generally not a nice person i do feel about 51% better today. Don't get me wrong I know i am not out of the woods yet and I know that tomorrow I may feel 100% worse (who knows) but just don't smoke and it should get better, no matter how much something/someone/anything annoys, no matter how bad the cravings get (and boy mine got real bad, I'm a 32 year old man and I haven't cried for sometime till now) just don't have one... you wanted to quit remember so that's what you're/we're are doing...... so just keep reminding yourself of this. BE STRONG

If you actually want to quit smoking cold turkey you have to stay away from the people that you usually smoke with and yes including your friends. It's either your life of your friends you choose. I made my decision, left all the so called friends that I had and kept in isolation from the outside except when I had to go to work. When you go to work, then this is the time that you will be psychologically tested. There is something called "desire", you see it then you want it and that is why I said that you need to be in isolation for some time to gain psychological strength and so forth.

So as I sit here and light one of the two cigs I have left I am feeling stronger than I did an hour ago. I have smoked since I was 16...now I'm 40!! I have thought about quitting for some time but now this little constant cough tells me that the time is now. I told my husband (non-smoker) that I was going to quit when this pack was gone and he said "yea right!" Well it's 2:27 AM right now and the hubby is away for a sleep study....when I go to sleep the cigs will be gone. Will put away all the ash trays and lighters and wake up tomorrow and begin what I don't think will be so hard this time. Am I stupid for thinking that?? No---I'm stupid for continuing to light up!! I wish all of you continued success as I begin---I will use the words of a very close friend when the urges hit me to light up----"This too shall pass!"

Good article. Today is MY day to say goodbye to cigarettes once and for all. Was this day planned? No. My blood pressure has been going up and I have had headaches for several days. Had a smoke a while ago, came in the house and took my blood pressure again. 149/95 with pulse of 104. My blood pressure was in the 112/70 range just a year ago. I have smoked , unfortunately for almost 30 years, and today was my "decision day" , turning point, or whatever you want to call it. When I saw what that little tiny cigarette is doing to my health, that was it !
I just threw away 7 unopened packs and a 1/2 a pack. Smoking is not worth your life !
My husband quit after smoking for 40 years in October 1999 , and has been smoke free since then.
I guess my eyes were opened for the first time today, as to the effects of smoking. I never checked my blood pressure after a cigarette before, and believe me, it terrified me today, so it is with GREAT joy that I say goodbye to an addiction that has held me captive for almost 30 years.
I pray that everyone here and who wants to kick the habit will make it and enjoy good health and freedom. Hang in there.. I am going to. No more being a slave to a deadly habit... take care :)

Very good article on tips for quitting.
I have a suggestion for anyone who wants to get a little angry about the chemicals that are put into their cigarette brand. It may be an incentive to quit also.
Just look up your cigarette brand online and go to the ingredients area to see how many chemicals are added to your cigarettes. My brand had over 300 chemicals added. Switched to 100% additive free cigarettes, got rid of the chemicals in my body after about 3 months, went through withdrawal from the chemicals, and am now ready and determined to quit forever !

This is very helpful for everyone facing stopping smoking. I stopped for a year in 2009, but had some trouble in Jan 2010 and got back on them again, Im so dissapointed in myself, so today is the day I stop again. I agree with all the posts advising some form of exercise, what I found worked for me was to jog/run at the gym. Now I hate any and all forms of cardio but I was amazed how I took to it once I stopped smoking, I had more energy where as I could normally only manage about 2 mins before collapsing in a wheezing mess, but in the end I was comfortably running 5 miles. I found by setting myself goals like 5 mins extra or aiming for a certain distance really gave me a huge boost, I could feel my lungs getting stronger it was an amazing sensation, not to mention clearer skin, and believe it or not I was less tense and stressed once the nicotine was out of my system as smoking damages the nerves, If you find yourself in a stressfull situation try to think along the lines of - Smoking may calm me for 2 mins but It is actually the addiction wreaking my nerves thats making me feel the stress so accutely in the first place! - we can all do it good luck everyone :) xx

Once again this article doesnt state anything i dont already know... we need to hear about more real life experiences where people in the exact same situation as us has been able to quit... listen to my story as my life is so fuked up and im really determined to make a change...
I have just turned 18 and i have been smoking NON STOP since i was about 9-10... i mean NON STOP every single day of every year for almost longer than ive been alive... it started off one day when me and a bunch of mate all sat around the back yard table and tryed our very first cigerette... after then it was so cool we were all doing it and it was a massive part or our lives... sadly now i CANNOT quit... ive tryed quitting cold turkey about 10 times and my brain will just force my to put the smoke between my fingers and smoke it.... my mum lets me smoke but my dad dosent so for the last 9 years i have been hiding it from him and usally i have to smoke a full one in under 30seconds about 20times per day so i dont get caught from my dad lol im really fuked up and im been addicted to weed pretty much the whole time also... my dad and mum have always been smokers... its just apart of my life its like i CANNOT possibly live without it.... i know i can but my brain wont let me.... My motovation to quit now is im only 18 and very short and have always wanted to be taller and maybe i have a few years of growing yet... i just have to find the correct method for me to stop smoking all together... any advice for me personally on how to correct my thinking or change my brain cravings would be incredibly helpful :)----- David

I havent read any other comments that talk about chewing tobacco an cigarettes... I am 17 years old and have smoked, dipped, and chewed since the age of 14, I am a firefighter and it seems to be the thing to do around the firehouse, i have quit twice each time for a total of 4 days, i never want to see tobacco again in my entire life time, this article does help. I have found lately that if you think to yourself that you want to smoke then you have to play a mind game with yourself you have to think about the good things in your life and how your family and friends have affected you and how it would tear them apart if you were to die from a pointless cause such as nicotine addiction, I choose to keep my life and live it well, i the rest of you do the same, oh....and the main reason i quit is because i read this article, i can not thank you enough, i read this every single day or anytime i have a craving

It was very good.I quit cold turkey nearly a year ago,my catalyst for never starting again is the smell and the money,my body, house and cloths smell great.Though after one week of not smoking my sense of smell came back with a vengeance, Inearly puked from the smell of a lemon it was so strong now perfumes like citrus smell cool but cigarette smells are so strong.
How long does it take for Nicoline to be flushed completely from ones body.if I have a wine my mouth tastes a bit like when I smoked.

Great article will return for encouregement a 8 yr smoker decided 2 days ago when out on the mountains that I had to quit. The turning point came when I sat about 3/4 of the way up panting for my breath, a 60yr old couple passed me as if the where walking round the supermarket. I returned back to my chalet found any remaining cigeretts and binned them this way I feel like I'm in control. Good luck to anyone trying to quit but it will be the best thing I ever do. Better than any mountain I have ever climbed.

30yr smoker, quit cold turkey 20 days ago, wasn't ready to quit, but after a severe attack of not being able to breath (thought i'd got a chest infection) decided that I wanted to breath more than I wanted a cig, Last pack is still in the drawer, with 18 cigs in it, It's been pretty hard at times, am living on orange juice and nut's (dont ask me why, but seems to be helping) am putting weight on by the hour !!!,, but you can lose the weight, you can't get your lungs back !!!. that last pack in the drawer, is now my nemesis, .I look at it, and tell it, that it dont have any power over me no more, And feel pretty good, just leaving it there.

Ive been a smoker for 8 years myself. Wasnt planning to quit at all, everybody was telling me how bad it is and that i should quit, i wasnt listening, maybe its just because im a human being and dont want to do things by command really. so instead of thinking of how much smoking can harm my body, i went on. Now few weeks ago suddenly i didnt feel too good after smoking, i felt that this smell didnt get away from me as easily, sometimes i woke upo and still felt the smell from a cigarette on me, that sisnt stop me though, i still kept smoking. Last week i just suddenly decided to quit cold turkey, up to today i was off from cigarettes for 5 days. Suddenly i started craving for a cigarette so badly that i just felt that i seriously need one, so i lighted a cigarette in fear that there it goes again now... God it felt good having that cigarette again. But after i finished and sat down i felt so bad, seriously sick. Cigarette smell was really bad and i could feel it on me so long. I could feel how it got into my blood and i got very week. Lucky i didnt wormet. The point is that you can blame me saying that ive just had a cigarette today, after 5 days of suffering, but you know what, just today i realised how horrible is smoking, a 5 day break after 8 years of smoking and one cigarette can feel so horrible. Now i can tell you that never ever again....

I'm 23 yrs old and I have been a smoker for 6 years. 6 Years/1 pack per day. I NEED to kick this bad habit! I tend to smoke first thing in the morning, after waking up, after I eat, when I'm bored, mad, or sad, before I go to bed at night, when I'm taking a break at work, and driving in the car (no matter the distance). This has got to stop! This article was helpful, but I already knew everything in it. I just bought a fresh pack of Newport 100's and I'm looking at them disgusted. I keep telling myself when this pack is empty, I'll quit. I've been here too many times. I plan on quitting and leaving 5 cigarettes in the pack...It might be setting myself up to fail, but I need it as a reminder and one day I hope to throw thoes last 5 cigarettes away and never going back...I'm counting down the days!

I don't think that any article can actually prepare someone to quit smoking. I quit approximately 3 days ago (so according to the research I should have no more nicotine in my system). That being said, I am not sure what lies ahead. But here is what I have for everyone else who is thinking about quitting... If you wake up and feel that today is the day, just stop. Make sure you tell your friends and family so when you have a craving you can talk to someone encouraging. Remember all the money you will save. In fact, plan to buy yourself something nice at certain landmarks because of the amount of money being saved. I substituted cigarettes for lolipops, just using dumdums to ease the cravings.
Also, I went and purchased nicorette type products to allow me to ensure I was able to quit, regardless of how the symptoms of withdrawal were. When I have a craving I smell my hair, my clothes. I look in the mirror as my teeth (3 days later without whitening agents) are whiter. I hug my nieces and play with them. I look online at smoking advice for quitting. I remember all the horrific ingredients that are in a cigarette. All of that helps and I know that I will never pick up another cigarette. I will not let an addiction beat me. I will not be defeated.

P.S. I also feel so much better that I wish every smoker would realize what you are doing to your body. The fact that you read this article means you are considering quitting. Just do it. You will feel better. You will smell better. You will smile better. And you will be someone who does not have an addiction, a chemical controlling your life. Take control. You can do it!

This was actually very helpful.. reading all the comments is a real motivation and i am going to put this in my favorites so i can come back to help keep me motivated. : ) Been smoking for 15 years and my husband and 3 kids keeping begging me to quit, I want to but the anxiety i get is overwhelming at times. But i know having a Grandmother who died of Lung cancer, My other grandmother died of multiple health issues C.O.P.D, Diabetes and Infuzema and now my mother has all 3 of those like her mother did. I need to quit with the possible conditions i could develop.. I Pray to God I can get through this!
